Description

The Journeys of Belonging. Jordi Savall's Routes of Slavery program pays tribute to the enormous contributions of enslaved Africans to world culture. This far-ranging public forum includes an artist talk with Savall, musical activity led by vocalist Melanie DeMore, and a panel discussion informed by the Haas Institute's Othering and Belonging framework. The conversation will focus on how outsider/subversive culture becomes part of the public sphere; how music can help people understand each other; and how, in the words of Jordi Savall, \"What we share is more important than what divides us.\" A 2018/19 Season Berkeley RADICAL Citizenship event. Free and open to the public.

3pm – Artist Talk with Jordi Savall, director and performer
Sabrina Klein, director of artistic literacy at Cal Performances, and Jordi Savall discuss the artistic inspirations and musical discoveries used to create this remarkable concert.

4pm – Music Experience
An interactive opportunity to experience the music, led by Melanie DeMore, vocal activist

4:20pm – Panel Discussion

The Haas Institute's Othering & Belonging framework informs a discussion on how outsider/subversive culture becomes part of the public sphere and how music is a key to how people understand each other.
